SUDBURY -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has confirmed that two people were killed in the shooting incident near Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island Thursday, a veteran OPP officer and a civilian.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique confirmed that Const. Marc Hovingh, a 28-year veteran member, was killed on Thursday afternoon.
The Special Investigations Unit said someone reported the presence of an unwanted man on a Gore Bay property to OPP around 12:30 p.m.
"Soon after arriving, officers encountered a man and an interaction ensued. As a result of that interaction, one officer sustained a fatal gunshot wound," said the SIU. "The man, who also was shot, was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."
"It did take place up on the East Bluffs, which is up in Gordon township, just outside the town of Gore Bay. I do know that there was two officers involved and one suspect," said Gore Bay Mayor Dan Osborne. "That’s all I know at this point."
An Espanola resident told CTV News shortly before noon he saw "a swarm of OPP officers heading toward the island."
