Honest question: Was joining the JSF project incumbent on actually buying any of the aircraft?

Because Canada (specifically Boeing in Winnipeg, P&W, etc) was in the project from the beginning.

No, at least not for the original initial MOU signed in 1997. The second phase MOU in 2006 for continuing into the Production, Sustainment and Follow-on Development portion of the program included requirements that all participating nations to agree to waive any own-nation industrial offsets. If they wanted to apply national offsets, they would have to leave the program and their respective industries receiving contracts from the program would be removed from the programs as a supplier. The program clause that comes closest to, but not quite explicitly a ‘no buy, get no more contracts’ condition, is the ‘best value’ condition that is determined by the program itself, which is weighed in proportion to the respective nations’ commitments to procure the aircraft, ie. No commitment to buy, then less influence in determining if your own nation’s supplier represents the best value to all members of the program.

Some how Canada built a part that was critical to the build program. So Canada was part of it from the beginning. The offset process works extremely well when they have something you want. Not so much when you have something they want to make their thing work.

The whole program from a Canadian perspective was interesting. Canada looking towards the 6th gen unmanned aircraft as a long term program, providing sensor fusion to future programs.
 
I wonder when they made that decision- end of last week after the postman left?
 
Aren't the first few tranches to be trained at Luke AFB? I thought I had read somewhere that 4 of the first Canadian F35s would be delivered to Luke for use by Canadian students.

Wasn't that always the intent. The first squadron will go to a training base.

Now that the threads are merged everything should make more sense. But yes, that was the intent despite the new articles wording.

The internet isn’t not going to affect their internal processes as they will run everything on an intranet.

But good to note that Iran is continuing its state sponsorship of terrorism and sabotage operations abroad — on a NATO member, and a defense contractor for NATO.

Maybe a NATO strike group of F-35’s should visit Iran.

All he is doing is paying in advance for the future delivery of 16 F-35 aircraft expected to be received in 2026. Attempt to increase the Defence budget now and delay criticism of our Allies (USA). Cynical move.
