Soldier Dies, Layton Calls For Pullout, Repeat

If I were to give credit to the Liberals, it would be for the fact that they don't use the political opportunism of Dr.Jack Layton in requesting Canadian troops withdraw from Afghanistan every single time a soldier is killed in action. It's important to be consistent as a political leader, to be sure, and Jack Layton is every bit as consistent about his position from day one: leave Afghanistan to the fundamentalists [retired Blogger Olaf would likely object to that line of consistency]. I've been unforgiving of Jack Layton on my blog, but not intentionally so. The NDP leader merely has done little I personally think is good public policy or good for the nation. It is during these little moments of political opportunism that I dislike him the most.

“The death of a soldier always focuses the minds of Canadians, first on the family and then on the comrades in the field,” Mr. Layton said. “But it also raises once again those questions as to whether there is a military end in sight here.”

This could be construed as a heartfelt statement from a leader who truly identifies with and laments the loss of human life. That is, if it weren't for the fact that Jack Layton uses this sound byte every single time a Canadian soldier dies, on cue, for the mass media to pick up on.

Sunday, September 3, 2006 in CBC News

"This is the wrong mission for Canada," Layton said Sunday at a news conference in Toronto following the announcement of the soldiers' deaths.

Dr. Jack Layton?  Did I miss something or is this a bit of sarcasm, like calling Steven Staples, holding a Bachelor of Education degree, a Military Analyst?

Since I have a combined bachelor's (honours) in German and Philosophy, what does that make me?  A rocket scientist?

(Get it?  Germans fuelled [pun intended] the rocket race between the USSR and the USA?  Many famous philosophers were german?  Get it?)
[/sarcasm]

Maybe not a Rocket Scientist; but do you have a couch and a notepad?  Do you see yourself as a Karl Jung?  Or perhaps a friend of Freud?

From his Party web site (http://www.ndp.ca/jacklayton)

Outside politics, Layton has been Chair of the Toronto Board of Health, a university professor, a small business owner, an author and a respected scholar. He studied foreign investment and public policy at York University, earning his PhD in 1984.
(emphasis added)

So, he is entitled to the honorific "Doctor", but he doesn't usually use it.

Darn!  Tripped up by the Non-Doctor Doctor.  Doctors should be MDs, not PhDs.  Crap!.....Just confuses us common folk.......I'll go off to my corner and sulk now....... :-[

Maybe we should pull out of Winnipeg: 2007-26 people murdered; 2006-22 people murdered; 2005-24 people murdered. Total = 72 - and these people aren't in a war zone.

Give me a break, Jack.

WRT Taliban Jack:

To sum up, the only thing that should be pulled out, is his head from his own ass!

What a disgusting national disgrace of a man (and I use that word loosely).

Cheers,

Wes

Too bad Jack's Dad didn't believe in an early pullout, we wouldn't have that laughingstock in the public eye now.

Don't forget to include the traffic accidents (I can think of 4 in Afghanistan off the top of my head) and suicides (1) and accidental shootings (2 at least).  The MSM forgets to mention that not all killed in Afghanistan were at the hands of the enemy.

That in no way, however, cheapens their sacrifice, let me be CRYSTAL clear on that one.

You may be right - but he's still entitled to the honorific.

So, by the way, were/are the following:

Stephanne Dion
Mr. Dion graduated from Université Laval with a B.A. in 1977 and an M.A. in 1979, both in political science. In 1986 he received his doctorate in sociology from the Institut d'études politiques in Paris.

Michael Ignatieff
Michael received a degree in History at the University of Toronto and a doctorate at Harvard University.

Interestingly enough, neither the current Prime Minister, Paul Martin, Jean Chretien, Kim Campbell (she never finished her thesis), Brian Mulroney, John Turner (another quitter), Joe Clark or Pierre Trudeau held doctorates (I didn't bother going further back).

It would appear, at least on the surface, that strong political leaders are "DOers", not "philosophers" (I take the cases of Kim Campbell and John Turner as examples of FAILEd "philosophers" AND leaders) - Paul Martin and Joe Clark don't fit the profile of either "strong leader" OR "failed philosopher".

For what it's worth - an interesting little sidebar to the main discussion.

While he may be entitled to the honorific, I'm personally not a big fan of his....... Then again I'm not much of a fan of any politician.... To quote Robin Williams from the movie Man of the Year "Politicians are like diapers, they should be changed frequently and for the same reason!" I've had the "pleasure" of escorting some politicians at various functions in past years, and was at the time amazed at how clueless they actually were..... But that's just my point of view..

Chimo

P.S. I'm not arguing about the honorific......

Edited for grammar

And I agree with you on both Mr. (Dr.) Layton, and politicians in general (but not always in specific).

BUT - that doesn't take away the fact of his Doctorate.

PhDs are the real doctors who should put Dr. in front of their name, rather than MD who are medical doctors, DD are doctors in dentistry, DVM are doctors in veterinary medicine etc.

Hunh?  ???

You know, when ever Dr.Layton speaks these days, I don't even bother to waste those precious minutes with nonsense, gibberish, or what ever he is trying to explain about something else he basically knows nothing about.

Jack, I just don't really like you. You do nothing to impress me.

(Rant off)

Trying to score political points out of the death of a soldier. Shameful !! :(

Can I ask for a pullout of my own? I'd like Layton to make a pullout, his head from his a**. What a tool.
