Canadian and U.S. warships opened up to public in Vancouver
Tight quarters put submarine HMCS Victoria off limits
By Staff Reporter, The Province April 25, 2013
Ships from the Royal Canadian Navy and the U.S. Navy arrived in Vancouver on Thursday and will be available for viewing and public tours Saturday and Sunday.
After being showcased for the public, the Canadian vessels will make their way to a joint exercise with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Army from May 3-19.
Among the vessels that will be in port is the submarine HMCS Victoria, although there won’t be any tours on the sub because of tight quarters on the ship.
The destroyer HMCS Algonquin will be available for tours Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the west side of Canada Place, while the American cruiser USS Lake Champlain can be toured at Burrard Pier in North Vancouver from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. along with HMCS Saskatoon and HMCS Nanaimo, which are Maritime Coast Defence Vessels.
Those three same vessels will also be open for tours again Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., again at Burrard Pier.
Anyone touring the vessels is advised to wear flat, rubber-soled shoes and appropriate clothing for climbing steep ladders. Strollers and wheelchairs won’t be allowed on board and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Large bags and backpacks are also prohibited. There will also be security screening.
