Child killer Clifford Olson's web page removed from MySpace

Published: Thursday, May 15
A profile of notorious child killer Clifford Olson on the social networking website MySpace has been taken down, but there are still unanswered questions about how new pictures of the murderer came to be posted online.

The web page, which can no longer be accessed because it is set to "private," contained recent photos apparently taken of Olson inside the Quebec prison where he is serving a life sentence for brutally murdering 11 B.C. children.

"It is important to clarify that offenders do not have access to the Internet in jail," said Melisa Leclerc, a spokeswoman for Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day.

Font:****The Correctional Service of Canada, which falls under Day's jurisdiction, said it does not have authority over the site but officials made a request to MySpace to remove the web page. The department has also launched an internal investigation to find out how pictures of Olson were made available to the public.

Federal officials launched the probe on Wednesday after a relative of one of Olson's victims came across the page while surfing the web.

Trudy Court was preparing for Olson's next parole hearing this summer. She immediately contacted authorities to get the profile removed.

Olson, 68, murdered her 13-year-old sister, Ada, in 1981.

Court wants to know who inside the prison took the photographs.

Some of Olson's "friends" who had been listed on the web page claim to be fellow serial killers Charles Manson, Son of Sam, Charles Ng and Moors Murderer Ian Brady.

On the page, Olson says he'd like to meet Jesus Christ, Pamela Anderson and Britney Spears.

Prison officials on Wednesday emphasized that while inmates have access to computers, they do not have access to the Internet. It is unclear whether Olson himself set up the MySpace page or whether it was the handiwork of someone else.

Gary Rosenfeldt, whose 16-year-old stepson, Daryn, was raped and murdered by Olson, said he was especially repulsed by photos of Olson in prison that appear to have been taken in recent years.

In a controversial deal with prosecutors, Olson struck a deal with the RCMP, who paid his family $100,000 in exchange for the serial killer's help in leading police to some of the bodies.
