I brought up this subject several years ago and almost got severely flamed
for my negative attitude. Nonetheless, I am a slow learner and once flamed
is not necessarily twice shy.
According to a CanFor Gen that I read yesterday Military Police in Canada
will now be issued a black work uniform, similar in appearance to civilian
police forces whoops, politically incorrect terminology, police
servicesacross North America, and available off the shelf. The MPs now
drive in cars that are, graphically, identical to municipal police forces
nation-wide i.e. white, coloured stripes, etc.. They wear a breast shield
and now carry their pistols in a choice of high-ride or low-ride holsters.
Although I don‘t have the numbers, it seems to me that while every other
branch is suffering manpower shortages, the Security Branch keeps growing.
It seems to me that the MILITARY purpose for police is being overlooked and
in its place we are getting a police force that is concentrating on the
Civilian issues.
By MILITARY I mean the handling of traffic and the escorting of prisoners
POW and miscreants, discipline of friendly troops and guarding the not so
friendly. Yeah, I know that we don‘t have a war handy but we do have a lot
of situations where our guys are in harm‘s way and are in a war in every
sense but name. Instead we have a large force of police doing building
security high priced building-pass checkers at NDHQ and handling ‘routine‘
civilian services on bases, i.e. speeding, domestic disturbance, drunkeness,
street patrols etc...
Now before everybody goes ballistic! I don‘t deny that these are essential
services. Some bases are larger than many towns in Canada. But shouldn‘t we
be contracting this out to provincial police agencies SQ, OPP, RCMP rather
than fund the entire infrastructure to duplicate the services within the CF?
One of the drawbacks to providing this expensive training and these
resources to make our MPs into clones of the civvy police is that after 6-10
years many of the MPs quit and join the higher paying civilian forces. This
puts the CF back into the vicious circle of hirng and training more MPs. We
have the same problem with the MPs that the CF are having with pilots,
doctors, dentists and lawyers.

Subject: Law and Security diploma for an MP??
Since when do we have that requirement? And how do you translate that in
Quebec terms, since our education system is different from the rest of
Canada. Thank you.
