For anyone who's interested, a show was made in the UK a while back called "Making Waves" which is a drama based around the Royal Navy.  Its pretty interesting and it looks like they've made a lot of effort to make it accurate.

However, they only filmed 6 episodes.. pity.. I thought it was good.

Check it out on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrDJ59FYivo

Thanks a link to Episode 1, part 1... you can find the rest of the episodes/parts from there.

Who needs a silly old show about the navy.  ::)

Fine, just kidding, I really enjoyed it too.  Only watched the beginning of the first one so far, but will definitely be watching more.  Reminds me of the time that I was in the middle of a light jackstay between Gatineau and Terra Nova when they did an emergency breakaway for a WUPs initiated manoverboard.  Scary stuff, but they handled it well and I was brought safely onboard before they let go of all lines.

I'm not sure if I heard this right watching the first episode, but did members of the crew call the XO "mom"?

At what point/time in it?  I'll watch it through again.

I heard it when they were dragging the female officer who went overboard in, I thought they were referring to her as mom, maybe it's how they address the women in their ranks.

Yeah I was trying to figure it out becuase it really does sound like 'mom'.

I've now watched the entire series (theres something to be said about a weekend off!) and it was quite enjoyable.  It was slightly formulaic and i'm sure it could be seen as a 6 hour promotional video for the RN.  Despite that, I throughly enjoyed watching it.  And it's a shame that it only lasted six episodes.

I only watched the first part of the episode. How they heck that guy made XO when he froze on a routine Rules of the Road situation. By the way since they were RAM they had the right of way over the merchantman. Then using 15 degrees of helm during a RAS is absolutely insane :P. But then maybe thats the way Kippers think! ;)

Perhaps the good XO was too embarrassed to assert his right of way over the merchantman because both his and the other ship had forgotten to hoist appropriate shapes to indicate that they were RAM!

What exactly is RAM?

Restricted in Ability to Maneuver

From Rule 3 in ColRegs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea):

(g) The term "vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre" means a vessel which from the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre as required by these rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.

The term "vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre" shall include but not be limited to:

(i) a vessel engaged inlaying, servicing or picking up a navigation mark, submarine cable or pipeline;

(ii) a vessel engaged in dredging, surveying or underwater operations;

(iii) a vessel engaged in replenishment or transferring persons, provisions or cargo while underway;

(iv) a vessel engaged in launching or recovery of aircraft;

(v) a vessel engaged in mineclearance operations;

(vi) a vessel engaged in a towing operation such as severely restricts the towing vessel and her tow in their ability to deviate from their course.

In this instance, as mentioned by Neill regarding appropriate shapes, it would be ball-diamond-ball that was required.  Now to watch the episode again, to see if they had them hoisted.  I don't recall seeing them.

I would be shocked and appalled if the RN would carry out a RAS (even for a TV show) without displaying the proper lights and shapes. That would cause Nelson, Collingwood, Drake, Cunningham and all the rest to spin in their graves. (knowing full well that all except Cunningham would have no idea about what I am talking about)

As would I, FSTO.  There weren't alot of closeups of the mast, so I can't be clear, but there did not appear to be any shapes hoisted.  The only thing flying, other than the ensign, was was "Golf" flag, signifying the Guide ship.

Just watched the first scene and you can see the RAM signal on the opposite ship. (Thank God! :))

AirMich,

There you go spouting off Navy stuff again...don't you remember you're in blue (or varying shades of green) now?

Haha.  I catch myself doing it all the time too.

Guilty as charged.  You can take the sailor out of the navy....

And it didn't take long for word to spread on my crew about where I came from.  My new name?  Yep, "shad".  ::)
