And this is exactly the sort of thing that Kris Sims of Sun Media was speaking of on the radio.  I just gave a safety talk yesterday on what to do in case of being involved with an Active Shooter situation.  Well done, both RCMP and HRPS.  My wife and kids were going out to the Scotiabank Centre for Hockey Day in Canada tomorrow too.    :salute:

Halifax police say they've stopped a plot to kill a large number of people in the city Saturday.

Police say they have three people involved in the plot in custody, and another was found dead in a home in Timberlea, N.S.

Police said a man and woman planned to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on Feb. 14 "with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves."

The roles of another man and male teen who were arrested is still unclear.

Police said they received a tip Thursday morning that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea and a 23-year-old woman from Illinois had access to firearms.

The roles of the other males arrested are aged 20 and 17, of Halifax and Cole Harbour respectively, is still to be determined as part of the investigation, police said Friday night.

Police tracked the 19-year-old down to Tiger Maple Avenue in Timberlea, entered the house and found him dead early Friday.

At 2 a.m., police arrested the 20-year-old man and the female suspect at the Halifax airport. At 11 a.m. Friday, police arrested the 17-year-old in Cole Harbour.

"We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation," police said.

The operation was run by Halifax police, RCMP, the Geneva Police Department in Illinois and other policing partners.

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of the man in Timberlea.

Halifax shooting plot foiled, police say

1 suspect dead, 3 in custody, in alleged plot to open fire at public venue, police say

CBC News Posted: Feb 13, 2015 7:23 PM AT| Last Updated: Feb 13, 2015 8:50 PM AT

RCMP say they've stopped a plot to kill a large number of people in Halifax on Saturday.

Police said they have three suspects involved in the alleged plot in custody, and another was found dead in a home in Timberlea, N.S.

"We want people to know we became aware, we acted quickly and intercepted a threat," said Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan.

A statement issued by police said a man and woman planned to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on Feb. 14 "with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves."

Brennan said a tip was received Thursday morning that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Ill., had access to firearms and presented a significant weapons-related threat.

The roles of the other male suspects, aged 20 and 17, of Halifax and Cole Harbour respectively, is still to be determined as part of the investigation, police said Friday night.

Police tracked the 19-year-old down to Tiger Maple Drive in Timberlea, entered the house and found him dead early Friday.

At 2 a.m. Friday, police arrested the 20-year-old man and the female suspect at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. airport. The woman was arriving in Canada, and the man was meeting her.

At 11 a.m. Friday, police arrested the 17-year-old in Cole Harbour.

"We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation," Brennan said.

"I wouldn't characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals that had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens."

He didn't say what the beliefs were, other than that "they were not culturally based."

The operation involved the Halifax police, RCMP, the Geneva Police Department in Illinois and other policing partners.

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of the man in Timberlea.

Police notified one specific venue of the threat, but would not say what venue that was.

"We are asking the public to remain vigilant about anything suspicious they may see or hear in their physical or online communities and to not hesitate to report anything to police," Brennan said at a news conference today.

On Friday, Nova Scotia RCMP and Halifax Regional Police said they had foiled a plot by several people to open fire and kill a "large number of individual citizens" in the Halifax area.

Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan and Halifax Regional Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais held a news conference to update the public on the details.

Brennan read a statement, then he and Blais took questions from the media.

What they said

BRENNAN: Good evening.

We've invited you here to provide an update on an ongoing investigation involving the sudden death of a 19-year-old Timberlea male and the arrest of three individuals.

On Thursday morning, information came forward to police regarding a potential significant weapons-related threat. RCMP and Halifax Regional Police officers from the Criminal Investigations Division began an investigation. We want people to know we became aware, we acted quickly and intercepted a threat.

Information suggested that a 19-year-old Timberlea male and a 23-year-old Geneva, Illinois, female had access to firearms and it was their intention to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on February 14th with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves. Evidence also suggested that two other males, ages 20 and 17, of Halifax and Cole Harbour respectively, were involved. Their role is still to be determined as part of the investigation.

Last evening, investigators located the 19-year-old male suspect at a Tiger Maple Avenue residence and at approximately 1:20 a.m., the Emergency Response Team entered his residence and found him deceased. As we previously issued in media release this matter has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team for investigation.

At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, police arrested the 20-year-old male and 23-year-old female suspects without incident at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police went on to arrest the 17-year-old male suspect without incident at a Cole Harbour residence.  All three suspects remain in police custody at this time and the Integrated Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate.

We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation. As always we are asking the public to remain vigilant about anything suspicious they may see or hear in their physical or online communities and to not hesitate to report anything to police. Citizens can also report tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

I also want to take this opportunity to recognize the tireless efforts of all those involved from the RCMP, Halifax Regional Police, Geneva Police Department in Illinois and other policing partners, who over the past 36 hours have been able to divert what had the potential to be an extremely tragic incident. As police, our priority is public and officer safety. As the Commanding Officer for the RCMP in Nova Scotia, I am extremely pleased to report that this threat was averted.

Chief Blais and I will now take a few questions. Please note that any questions in regard to the investigation into the death of the male should be directed to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team. As well, I want everyone to understand that this matter is ongoing so we will not be answering any questions specific to the continuing investigation.

Thank you.

Media questions

QUESTION: Which area in Halifax was the target?

BRENNAN: Well, again, that's part of an ongoing investigation. I can tell you that one specific location, we've been in contact with that location and have explained the threat to them and they are well prepared. But as that is part of the investigation, at this time we are not prepared to release specifics around that.

QUESTION: Can you confirm it was a shopping mall?

BRENNAN: Again, part of the investigation. Cannot answer that specifically.

QUESTION: Was it on the peninsula or in Dartmouth?

BLAIS: At this point in addition to what the Assistant Commissioner had indicated, at the very beginning outset of this investigation there were several areas that were identified. Further inquiries and investigation have allowed us to determine one specific area in the Halifax area.

QUESTION: Can you give us any details about how you found out this information?

BLAIS: Just through the investigation that is ongoing.

QUESTION: Did you get a tip through Crime Stoppers? Or was this something that the police found in their own investigation?

BRENNAN: I can tell you that it was a tip, a source from the public that initiated the initial investigation and then the investigation by the police officers led us to where we are currently today.

On weapons

QUESTION: What kind of weapons did they have?

BRENNAN: Again, that's part of the ongoing investigation and we won't be giving specifics on that.

QUESTION: Did you work with Homeland Security or the FBI on this?

BRENNAN: Again, that's part of the investigation. I can tell you that we are working directly with the Geneva police department in Illinois in the United States. And they would be reaching out to their partner agencies to fulfil their end of the investigation.

QUESTION: Can you confirm if they were going to use shotguns or bombs?

BRENNAN: No, again, part of the investigation. Not in position right now to give specifics around the weapons or the type of devices that may or may not have been considered to be used.

QUESTION: Would you consider this a terrorism threat? Is it home-grown terrorism?

BRENNAN: I wouldn't characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals that had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens but there's nothing in the investigation to classify it as a terrorist attack or terroist incident.

QUESTION: What do you mean by "some beliefs"?

BRENNAN: Again, that is part of the investigation and we're not in a position right now to discuss that.

On the suspects

QUESTION: Can you say if they were of a jihadist nature? Evangelical, right-winged nature?

BRENNAN: I can tell you that it's not culturally based.

QUESTION: But you aren't ruling out whether this is terrorism?

BRENNAN: We're not ruling anything out until the investigation is concluded. But our investigation is not leading us down that particular avenue at this time.

QUESTION: Was the 17-year-old a student at Cole Harbour High School?

BRENNAN: I can't confirm that because I don't have that information. I'm sorry.

QUESTION: Can you elaborate about where he was arrested?

BLAIS: He was arrested in Cole Harbour.

QUESTION: Can you confirm whether a house on Havelock Crescent is also involved in this investigation?

BLAIS: Honestly, we don't have that information ourselves. We don't have that information.

QUESTION: But it was in Cole Harbour, I'm assuming you had a house under investigation?

BLAIS: The individual was arrested in Cole Harbour.

QUESTION: Can you confirm the name of the person who is now deceased.

BRENNAN: Well again, as I mentioned in my statement, that particular investigation is now being led by the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team so any questions related to that particular case should be directed to them.

On the size of the alleged plot

QUESTION: The house was empty other than this person who died. But there's a family that lives there. Can you confirm where they are or if they've been informed?

BRENNAN: Yes, I can confirm that we've been dealing with the family that resides at that residence where the deceased was located and we are working with them and liasing with them in that regard.

QUESTION: Can you characterize how big this plan was for tomorrow?

BRENNAN: The evidence to date and the information is that had they been able to carry out their plan, the potential was for there to be a large number of individual citizens put at risk and thus, you know, that relates to the potential for how many potentially could have been killed.

QUESTION: Depending on what sorts of weapons they had, there would be a very different casualty count.

BRENNAN: It would also depend on what type of environment they were in. So we're not going to get into specifics about the investigation but as I stated, had they been able to carry out their intentions, the possibility for a large loss of life was definitely there.

QUESTION: Those two arrests at the airport, were they leaving?

BRENNAN: No, one was entering Nova Scotia. The other one was a resident of Halifax.

This is what AP is reporting. This is a big story down here today, only the storm in the North East being bigger.

Some of the points, specifically the circumstances related to the deceased don't square with the official comments.

APNewsbreak: Police foil plot to kill people at mall

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/canadian-police-foil-plot-to-kill-people-in-halifax/2015/02/13/99ec3e60-b3e1-11e4-bf39-5560f3918d4b_story.html

TORONTO — Canadian police foiled a plot by two suspects who were planning to go to a mall and kill as many people as they could before committing suicide on Valentine’s Day in Halifax, a senior police official said.

The official told The Associated Press on Saturday that police acted quickly after receiving information from the public on the Crime Stoppers tip line.

The official spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

A 19-year-old male suspect shot himself to death after police surrounded his home, the official said. A 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Illinois, was arrested at Halifax airport and confessed to the plot, the official said, adding that she had prepared a number of pronouncements to be tweeted after her death.

The official said the suspects used a chat stream and were apparently obsessed with death and had many photos of mass killings. Police and Canadian Justice Minister Peter MacKay said the plot was not related to Islamic terrorism.

“This appeared to be a group of murderous misfits that were coming here, or were living here, and prepared to wreak havoc and mayhem on our community,” MacKay said. “It would have been devastating. Mass casualties were a real possibility.”

MacKay credited police for their quick action.

At the home of the male suspect, police saw two people leave the house who they determined were his parents and pulled them over on a traffic check. They then called the suspect.

The man told police that he didn’t have any guns, but shot himself as he was on his way out of the house, the official told the AP.

The official said police worked with Canadian border officials to find the female suspect on her flight as she was making her way from Chicago.

Police said Friday they first received information a day earlier about a potentially significant weapons-related threat. Police said two other Nova Scotia men, ages 20 and 17, were also involved, although investigators are still trying to determine what their roles were. The police official said the 17-year-old male was wanted for threatening to shoot up a high school and had an outstanding warrant.

MacKay said all the suspects have been arrested or are dead. He said police would release more information publicly later Saturday.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney applauded the work of police in Canada and Geneva, Illinois and well as border officials in a statement. The Geneva police department said in a statement they were contacted by Canadian police and had no contact with the American woman before her arrest.

That is far more information than is being released here locally.  It may not have been connected to Islamic terrorism, but their intent was to terrorise the public nevertheless.  Thanks for posting the update.

Police are now saying the target of the attack was the Halifax Shopping Centre.  Again, well done to the tipster who called Crimestoppers and the police both here and in the US who shut it down.  :salute:

You think it could never happen here, but this is just another example of how it could happen anywhere.

Bigger question is WTF could drive people to the point where they would carry out something like this in the first place?

This is becoming more and more common of late. More so here in the US, but starting to grow in Canada as well. Not just the radicalized dimwits, but the ones who are out just to create mayhem for the so-called "fun" of it.

More updates, names of two adults charged:

Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, Randall Steven Shepherd charged in Halifax shooting plot

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/lindsay-kantha-souvannarath-randall-steven-shepherd-charged-in-halifax-shooting-plot-1.2957685

Police have charged two people with conspiracy to commit murder in the case of a foiled plot to kill a large number of people at the Halifax Shopping Centre in the city's west end.

American Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath from Geneva, Illinois, 23, and Randall Steven Shepherd from Halifax, 20, have been charged.

A third person, a 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour, has been released without charges. At this time, police say there is no evidence to link him to the charges before the courts, but the investigation is ongoing.

Police tracked down a fourth suspect, a 19-year-old, to a home on Friday on Tiger Maple Drive in Timberlea, N.S., about 20 minutes outside of Halifax. Police entered the house and found the suspect dead early Friday. His death is under investigation by Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team.

Officers seized three long-barrelled rifles from the Timberlea home.

Souvannarath was arrested at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport upon arriving in Canada early Friday morning, at around 2 a.m. Sheppard, who was there to meet her, was also arrested.

Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan said a Crime Stoppers tip from Canada helped them foil the mass shooting, but wouldn't provide more information about where the information came from.

This phenomenon is not unknown. Throughout recent history there have been several examples of people engaging in what can be termed "spree killing" . Sometimes it's one person, sometimes it's two or more.
When it's a duo  One personality has to be dominant and the other subservient.

There are a lot of depressed people out there, with really low self esteem, that really want to kill themselves, but need something to really push them over the edge to do it - this way they do something spectacular to get noticed and also have a catalyst to give them the level of badness they finally can't live with to push them to do themselves in.  As HS mentioned, there's often someone that manages to suck others into their vortex of stupidity who's the brainchild (or child brain depending on how you look at it) so they have someone else dumber than them to make them feel even better about themselves to help out...a form of bullying if you wish.  It's much easier to die with others around you than alone...

My theory and I'm sticking to it.

Actually a mass murderer will kill several at one time and location and not expect to live.

A serial killer kills three or more victims but with a cooling off period in between killings and expects to survive.

A spree killer will kill then move on, but the cooling off period in between becomes shorter and have no idea whether or not they will survive.

It will not surprise me to hear that "they were nice people, but a bit off...."

And everyone will now be on edge for the next while.

Halifax police took seven young people into custody at the Halifax Shopping Centre on Saturday evening after a report of a weapon sent shockwaves through a community already on edge from a foiled mass shooting plot.

Police said in a news release that the weapon turned out to be “kids with a slingshot.”

Roads into the mall were closed after police received the weapons report at 6:40 p.m.

UPDATE

Halifax police took seven young people into custody near the Halifax Shopping Centre on Saturday evening after a report of a weapon sent shockwaves through a community already on edge from a foiled mass shooting plot.

Police said the weapon turned out to be kids with a slingshot.

‎”There is no active shooter situation at Halifax Shopping Centre,” police said in a release sent out at about 7:30 p.m.

Two teenage boys involved in the incident will appear in youth court on Tuesday, Halifax police said early Sunday morning.

The 16-year-old and 17-year-old face a number of charges, including property damage, possession of dangerous weapons, breach of probation and breach of recognizances.

Earlier Saturday, police had identified the mall as the target of an attack that had been planned for Valentine’s Day.

Police received a call of multiple shots fired at bus in the Mumford Road area at about 6:40 p.m. and dispatched numerous police units and as well its Emergency Response Team to the scene, said Staff Sgt. Julia Cecchetto.

The caller told police that “a bus had been hit and then we started receiving other calls from passengers on the bus. Passengers were lying down on the floor of the bus,” she said.

The Halifax Transit bus had just turned off Mumford Road onto the shopping centre boulevard, near St. Agnes School, when the incident occurred.

“One of the windows of the bus was hit,” Cecchetto said.

However, police quickly realized that they weren’t dealing with a gunfire because the damage to the bus was minimal.

“It became fairly obvious that we didn’t have a firearm ... .It made a mark but it did not penetrate the bus window. Generally with a firearm, it would have penetrated,” Cecchetto said.

Police searched the area and found a group of teenagers, three girls and four boys between the ages of 13 and 17, in the parkade off the Mumford Road entrance. Officers then found two slingshots in the area.

All were interviewed by police.

The mall was closed down at about 7 p.m. as many people were upset and were worried that there was an active shooter.

“We suggested it might be best,” Cecchetto said.

Police held the bus passengers for awhile so they could get information from them.

Many passengers on the bus were upset but all were OK, she said

Contrary to what some witnesses in the area said, people in the mall were allowed to leave at any time, police said.

“The mall was not locked down. ... Stories got embellished. People started making up their own stories,” Cecchetto said.

The incident appears to be random and “does not appear to be in any way related to the events that have occurred over the last few days,” police said in a release.

More on the deceased suspect.

Dead man linked to shooting plot referenced Columbine on blog

http://thechronicleherald.ca/metro/1269266-dead-man-linked-to-shooting-plot-referenced-columbine-on-blog

A longtime neighbour of the man who was found dead in a Timberlea home and is alleged to have been part of a mass shooting plot says he came from a good family.

The neighbour said James Gamble is the man police found in a Tiger Maple Drive residence at about 1:20 a.m. Friday.

“I can’t even imagine,” said the woman, who didn’t want to give her name. “I heard one shot. I heard the shot.”

She said she has known Gamble, 19, for many years and that he was a “good boy” from a good family who grew up playing with her son.

He was found at 16 Tiger Maple Dr., which is owned by John Gamble and Patricia Cody. No one answered the door at the residence on Saturday.

Gamble graduated from Sir John A. Macdonald High School in Upper Tantallon and later worked at Walmart.

James Gamble’s Facebook profile shows a typical teen, interested in music including AC/DC, The Beatles, Rammstein and KMFDM. In August, he posted a photo of the first alcohol he bought legally — a bottle of Jack Daniels.

But his Tumblr blog shows a different story — photos of Gamble with a gun, photos of Nazis marching, footage and photos from the Columbine shooting, and a quote attributed to one of the Columbine shooters: “This is a weird time, weird life, weird existence.”

One post features Bart Simpson closing the blind on a window with the caption “February 14th is coming.”

A friend of Gamble’s, who did not want her name published, said “crime blogs” are not uncommon on tumblr.

“He was really kind of into the Columbine tag on Tumblr, but there’s a lot of people who are,” she said. “There’s a lot of crime blogs out there. It’s just an interest that some people have.”

The woman said she has only known Gamble for a few weeks, but described him as a quiet, sweet and gentle person who has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts.

“I just want people to know that he’s not a monster,” she said. “All of this is a really big shock.”

The friend believes a rumour she has heard that it was Gamble himself who tipped the police off about the plot.

“I feel like he realized things were getting way out of hand,” she said. “He realized they were serious about it and it was too late to back out and he did what he could.”

Add to that the idea of online losers looking for mutual support and working to impress the pretty girl in the plot.
