Subject: Gov‘t Negligence
I just finished reading an editorial in the Winnipeg Free Press that
dealt with the aging fleet of DND helicopters, specifically the
Labradors and the Sea Kings. Last week some of you may recall seeing the
story about the sea King that had to ditch on a small island off of Nova
Scotia and ended up stuck in a bog. Luckily no one was hurt, nt the case
in 1998 when a Labrador went down in Quebec resulting in 6 deaths of
members of the Sar Tech squadron in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. My
brother-in-law was a member of that squadron at the time and had to go
on the recovery mission to retrieve the bodies of friends and co-workers
from the crash site. It wasn‘t that long before this event that the new
gov‘t under Chretien cancelled the Cormorant contract to the tune of a
$500 million cancellation fee. There is no way to candy coat this, it is
blatant negligence and placed those men who died, and the personnel who
continue to fly in these relics, at unnecessary risk. There is no way
these birds would ever meet civilian standards, but hey, soldiers are a
dime a dozen right? I‘ll tell you right now, if I had received this
investigation, I would have absolutely no problem proving criminal
negligence causing death and the persons charged would be far ranging
and both up and down the chain of command. It is the same all over the
forces. I went to a Crown Assest auction last year and they were selling
off a few Iltis‘, but there were big signs on them stating they could
not be registered in Manitoba. When i asked why, they informed me that
they had grossly failed collision tests, with the hood regularly
detaching and punching through the windscreen. This would decapitate
anyone in the front seat and is just not acceptable for Joe Civie, but
hey, soldiers are a dime a dozen, right? This blatant negligence has got
to stop before any more husbands/wives and children have to be told that
daddy/mommy is not ever coming home, not because of hostilities, but
because their leaders ignored their safety while trying to save a buck.
