The Raptors intercepted 2 IL-38's over the Bering Sea. Old planes not much trouble for modern fighter to intercept.

I think it's more just to stay relevent on the international stage, and remind the Americans they are there.

Alaska is home to more 5 Gen fighters than anywhere else on the planet.  F22's and F35's are slowly becoming the bulk of the force in Alaska, with a nice chunk of F-15's still in the mix also.  The Russians are well aware of this.  Any aerial conflict near Alaska would be pretty damn short.
