hi all, this is a really cool site, i've looked through the search and i'm not finding some of what i was looking for about me wanting to joing into the canadian force's. does anybody in the force's produce it's own electronics components for all the elsctronic equipmnet in the force's, i was wondering because i have alsways been interested in electonics and electrical things, i'm finishnig a technology diploma in electronics and would like to use what i'd learned in class to be able to use it in a job.  a lot of things that the force's does looks preety cool, especially i think that a lot of stuff is almsot all using electronics in it, what kind of thing could i do that would use a lot of what i've done in school, i'm having done a lot of radios and phones and things that do communication, not so much the wireless stuff for computer networks, don't get me wrong, I like computers and stuff but i like radios and stuff, i now that lots of guys in the force's do things with radios, specialy because i know lots of guys are pretty far away around the world and everything and i'm pretty sure that you guys use radios and sattelites to communicate, what kinds of things to guys get to do besides just hooking up radios and things? i'd like to get doing things that i can use after i serve my time in the force's, maybe starting my own business that specilizes in making communications happen, i think there is lots of stuff other than just phones that would be pretty good to get in to after a few years in the force's. does anyone have any experiences like what i'm interested in doing? also, what kind of training do we need before we get in to the force's? i'm interested in gaming and some other things at home but i now that i wold have to get into shape, it's not like i'm fat or anything but i now i shold do more sports, what kind of things should i do to get in to shape? thanx, matt

Matt,

First of all BREATHE!  lol.  No offense, but you need to pause in your writing just like you do in talking.  Break it down into sentences and paragraphs so it's a bit more readable.  I stopped about halfway through because it was getting hard to follow.

I did catch that you are interested in communications and electronics, that type of stuff.  The DND website for recruiting has some great functions to see what you might be best suited for.  You should check that out.  Also, look into Naval Electronics Tech.  Within that trade, you can choose Communications, Radar or Sonar.  That is just one off the top of my head, but see what else you might be able to find: http://www.recruiting.forces.gc.ca/v3/engraph/home/home.aspx?bhcp=1

Well, you can poke around here...the Communications and Electronics forums.

Also, from the CF Recruiting site.

Enthusiasm  - Great
Interest - Fantastic

But please,... grammar!!  You're causing me eyestrain!

sorry...i know my grammer isn't to good, i'll try and work on that, but thnaks for the information.  i've looked at the links you gave me mud amn, there's lots of good stuff there, so i'll be lloking at that stufff more. it looks like the kind of thing i'm interested in, i'll do more looking there to see what kind of stuff the CE people do. a friend of mine was telling me i should maybe talk to someone in the recruting center but another guy said that there are not always the kind of people you wnat to talk to, like the kind of thing they do might not be what your interseted in doing. how do you now if the people there do what your interested in? thanx
Matt

Well, you could ask the staff there if there is anyone from "trade you are interested in".  There may be, there may not be.  However, on those links at the "CF Recruiting Videos" for each trade.  The Sig Op and Navy ones, IIRC, are very recent while the ATIS and LCIS ones (ATIS for sure) are somewhat older.

The CFRC "might" be able to get you some time with a tradesperson, if there is none on staff at the CFRC but I wouldn't count on it...again, poke around the C & E forum on here, lots of info.  You can search the forum too, and find wealths of info.

You've got them switched around a bit, MRM...depending on how you look at it.

The Navy NE Tech trades have been around a while.  Pre-MORPS (around the early 1980s), maintenance and operation were carried out by the same people.  After MORPS, the trades branched into separate operator and tech trades - for example, Naval Radio Operator and Naval Electronics Tech (Communications).  Junior techs (like me) at the time were employed for a few years as operators, up until the QL5 point when they went on tech courses.  Eventually they became "straight up" tech trades, with no requirement for any operator experience, and went straight from recruit school to academic electronics training.

ATIS and LCIS were produced as the result of the merging of several trades in the late '90s.  Serving members in the following trades became ATIS and LCIS techs:

  • RAD TECH (Radio Technician)
  • TE TECH (Terminal Equipment Technician)
  • TEL TECH (Teletype and Cipher Technician)
  • RDR TECH (Radar Technician) - aka *ping* *pong* *divide by 2*
  • COMM TECH (Communications Technician)

As some of those were serving in those trades at the time would tell you, some didn't get a choice whether they got ATIS or LCIS.  I'm also under the impression that Sig Op is also a new trade, a result of the merge between the old Radio Operator, Teletype Operator and Communications Operator trades.

The CFRC "might" be able to get you some time with a tradesperson, if there is none on staff at the CFRC but I wouldn't count on it...again, poke around the C & E forum on here, lots of info.  You can search the forum too, and find wealths of info.

Yup, there are representatives here from all of the electronics trades in the CF.  I hadn't noticed that the recruiting centres had started referring to the Navy trades as NE Tech (Radar) and NE Tech (Sonar)...as far as I know, they're still NE Tech (Tactical) and NE Tech (Acoustic), but that may be a move by the recruiters to make the trade description more "civvie friendly".

Edited to include obligatory dig at the Radar Techs...
;D

I must have worded that poorly.  I meant the Sig Op and Navy "videos" are newer as opposed to the trades...and the LCIS and ATIS videos are somewhat older.

Ah, I see what you mean now.  Yep, the Navy ones are definitely new, probably within the last year or so.  The ATIS one is probably 5-6 years old...my current boss is in it, and he tells me that they filmed his segment up by the tower at Shearwater.

Quite a few of the people in the Navy videos are former students of mine...interesting.  Must've taught them well :)
