Doctors:

      1. The number of doctors in Canada is 700,000

      2. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000

      3. Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%

Statistics courtesy of the Canadian Dept of Health & Human Services

      Guns:

      1. The number of guns owned in Canada is 80,000,000 (yes that's 80 million)

      2. The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500

      3. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.001875%

      Statistics courtesy of the RCMP

So statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, guns don't kill people, doctors do.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors  before this gets completely out of hand!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld statistics on  lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention. Then we would be in real trouble.

This is interesting indeed.. Just makes me re-affirm my position even more.

Lets not get things wrong here, I am pro-gun and always will be.

Humm, when I left Canada in January of 1995, there was 26,000,000 people and about 21,000,000 firearms, and many estimate that was high for the gun tally.

80,000,000?? The federal govornment estimates less than 8,000,000 firearms. So your figure here is wrong, and way off the mark of even 21,000,000.

What the heck is the Canadian Dept of Health & Human Services ??
Do you mean Health Canada?
700,000 Doctors ????  We all wish !

According to the Canadian Medical Association there are currently only
31672 people with a General practice, and a further 21918 specialists in Canada.
That totals only 53590 doctors.

I think every figure in that post is wrong. 120000 physician caused deaths per year ?
That's 328 people a day. That's out to lunch.

I agree the math is way off... but I agree the deaths due to firearms compared to many other causes is overlown.

If guns kill people, spoons make Michael Moore fat!

lol...

ha i had a good laugh when i saw that. but currently i have 2 doctors, one of them i see every morning, hmmmm makes me happy i am going to whitehorse for 7 weeks

I suspect this was found in his email inbox.

As for guns, well, lets not get into that debate.

This is what happens when someone takes an American joke, changes "USA" for "Canada", but does not change the names of organizations or re-configure the statistics.

The guvmint says 7,000,000 firearms in Canada.  About 15 years ago they estimated 15,000,000 with about an extra 500,000 a year being imported.  A safe bet now would be 18,000,000 - about the same as the number of motor vehicles in Canada - for 33,000,000 people.

And - not that this is the right thread - but what would happen if we tried to register 18,000,000 motor vehicles out of a fishing village in New Brunswick?

Tom

Eighty percent of statistics are made up on the spot by those who are using them. ::)

I have got to agree with the others, let's see some sources when the stats start flying please.

Good point.  I should have done that to start with.  So, note the fol:

"In May of 1976, Liberal Justice Minister Ron Basford published a report that stated: â Å“At the same time, there has been a steady increase in the number of firearms in Canada.  Estimates place the number at over ten million in 1974, with almost one-quarter million added to the stock every year.  Most of these firearms are long guns (rifles and shotguns).â ? [Emphasis added] The Minister was no doubt referring to an extensive Statistics Canada survey that reported that in 1974 the Firearms Stock in Canada consisted of 11,186,000 firearms.

Using the Justice Minister's 1974 estimates I calculated: 10 million firearms + 6,500,000 (250,000/year x 26 years) = 16,500,000 firearms in Canada in 2001.

GOVERNMENT ESTIMATES OF THE NUMBER OF FIREARMS â “ 1994-1998
Over the next eighteen years, despite the importation of 5 million firearms, the government lowered their estimates of the number of firearms in Canada from 10 or 11 million in 1974 to 7 million in 1994.  A Justice Department briefing note dated March 9, 1994 stated: â Å“In total, it is estimated that 7 million guns are owned by 3 million gun owners...2.7 million households contain 2.7 guns each.â ?  RCMP documents obtained though Access to Information indicate that this number was only the â Å“Low Endâ ? estimate and that the government's â Å“High Endâ ? estimate was over 11 million firearms.

â Å“Since 1995, I've been asking the government to explain where millions of guns went between 1974 and 1994,â ? said Breitkreuz.  Without even counting the 5 million guns imported since 1974, there is still a 4 million-firearm discrepancy between Statistics Canada's 1974 survey and the government's current estimates.  â Å“The Liberals have never answered the question.  I wonder why the government is misleading us?â ?

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics

Accidental deaths per physician = 0.171 (U.S. Dept. of Health &
Human Services)
Number of gun owners in the US = 80,000,000
Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) =1,500

Okay.. Now lets compare the amount of times physicians help people compared to the amount of times guns help people (within the Country).

Last time I saw a daoctor was over 6 months ago. I used my gun last night to keep a coyote away from my livestock.
