Full interview viewable hereAmid renewed criticism over the treatment of Canadian veterans, the country’s top soldier defended the system in an exclusive interview with CTV News, saying the government has worked hard to provide a “security net” for ex-soldiers.
Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Tom Lawson, told CTV’s Mercedes Stephenson that “fewer and fewer people are falling through the cracks” thanks to the efforts of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the military.
Lawson said the military has been working “very closely” with Veterans Affairs and other groups “to provide a security net that looks after veterans.”
“We’ve come so far since we entered the conflict in Afghanistan,” he said of the services available to former soldiers.
The way Canada takes care of its ill and injured veterans is a “great story” among other countries who’ve also sent troops to conflict zones, Lawson said.
“We’re well ahead of many of our NATO allies who look to us for that lead.”

“As they work through these issues and ask for any advice from us, we will certainly be giving them our full assistance,” he said ....
