Will there be any major public events/demonstrations put on by the Army this summer?

June 5th is Canadian Forces Day, what events will be going on here in Alberta?

I checked the CF website and some of the home pages of regiments, but did not see anything specific.

Anyway, if there are events on your base this summer, maybe list them here so everyone knows.

Hey Pieman,

The following is a quote from CANFORGEN 079/04:

CF DAY IS A CATALYST FOR THE CANADIAN PUBLIC TO RECOGNIZE MEMBERS OF THE CF IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. CF DAY IS NOT CF-DRIVEN, BUT RATHER COMMUNITY-DRIVEN.

Simply put, the CF does not put on functions for Armed Forces Day.  It is up to the respective communities to decide to put something on, or not and to organize and plan it.  A light bulb went on a few years ago at NDHQ after someone noticed soldiers didn't look forward to Armed Forces Day.  After much study, it was found that taking yet another weekend from soldiers and their families, having them conduct parade practices for weeks in advance and then having them bash a parade square under a hot sun or monsoon-like rains didn't improve their morale in the least.

Ah OK, that is interesting. I figured it would be a day to be used for promoting the forces. But that is cool. Now, I have to wonder if any activities are actually planned in my community.

Are there any days where public demonstrations are put on? I was at a event years ago on Canada Day here in Calgary, and we had a great time sitting in old tanks, and watching the Army put on demonstrations of various weapons.

I would love to attend something like that this summer, specifically in Alberta.

We used to put on a fairly large display at the Stampede every year, don't know if this is still the case...

I saw them at stampede last year, so I assume it will be the same. I was cool, but a Fairly basic display. I am hoping to go to a larger event this summer if there is one.

I believe we will be setting up a booth for the molson indy. But that isn't 100% yet....

That should be it for the summer.  Keep in mind, in Calgary, it is mostly reserves and they are essentially stood down for the summer.  Summer is when the taskings are for training, either as candidates or instructing staff.

What about in other parts of Alberta? Any big displays on the other bases?

Try K-Days in Edmonton, used to be a pretty good vehicle display.

If you don't care if it's Canadian or British, the Brit have had an open house at CFB Suffield called BATUS Day.

The Stampede parade and display will be on in Calgary this year, just like every year. The Stampede event has a large Res component, but it is run by LFWA and supported by 1 CMBG and 1 ASG. As well, the Res soldiers participating have traditionally come from all three of our Res CBGs, on a "deserving soldier" selection basis. This year (IIRC) it is being opened to the other seven Res CBGs. From what I understand, the duty on the display is a very good go: the Army display is hugely popular with the people, and the troops can get their evenings off in downtown Calgary in the high summer if they are not on shift.

From a Res perspective, the pressure is off for Armed Forces Day (I think) because it is no longer the sole source of footprint activities: we now do such a wide range of activities, all year long, that we're not relying on a single day anymore. However, I believe we could still do more: a recent poll I saw indicated that the  majority of Canadians knew little or nothing about the Res in their communities. Obviously we still need to conect with Canadians a bit better.

Cheers.

The units from here in St.John's usually put something off each year down at Quidi Vidi lake and it's immensly popular. Hoping it gets another go 'round this year. I think that things like that are very effective at getting GOOD publicity, which is always nice.  8)

I know the gun run team should be at the calgary stampede. they keep saying that, but I'm not on the team so I couldn't tell you for sure.

I did the gun race for 5 years and we toured all over Canada.Usually training kicks off in April and the team tours all summer. Some of the performances were Halifax tatoo, Cabot 500 throughout Nefoundland, airshows across Ontario, Grey cup 99, Klondike days and the list goes on. A little known fact is the gun race team is no longer strictly Artillery but open to all trades. The CF is funneling more money into the team these days since for the cost of one snowbirds tank of fuel, you can run the gun race for a whole weekend.
