I went down to MEC to buy some of their most excellent plastic spoons, which are IMHO the best on the planet, and discove rd that they pulled them after a cancer scare, as well as all their Nalgene bottles. It looks like they've given in to the tinfoil hat wearing brigade.

They're recommending stainless steel right now for reusable water bottles.

Of course, I'm sitting here drinking out of a Nalgene right now, so I'm not the best person to ask.  I don't know if it's possible to avoid all the potential "cancer causers" right now.

This came out a while ago.

I was drinking away from my bottle when a student I was teaching FA to said "You know, those things are cancer causing?" and I said "Pardon?!" read the news article and continued drinking from it... I don't know, seems like everything'll kill you these days.

I wouldn't say tinfoil hal, but more like overly cautious.

stop selling some products that contain bisphenol A, a chemical used to make some plastics that has been linked in some studies to increased incidence of cancer and other diseases...But activists opposed to the use of bisphenol A point to more than 100 independent studies which link the chemical to increased incidence of cancer, obesity, and early onset of puberty.

It is possible that those studies where mabe about the baby bottles one. Most of the stores have taking out of theirs shelves theirs baby bottles
containing bisphenol A. Studies  have been showed  that bisphenol A was mixing with the milk in judge too high concentration after the bottle has beed heated...

l est à noter que les concentrations de bisphénol A augmentaient de façon exponentielle lorsque les biberons étaient chauffés .

I think that if you follow all the articles about potential carcinogens, you'll find the air you breathe, the food you eat, and the liquids you drink will all kill you.

I look at the Job Im in (Army), and the Career I want to get into... (OPP/RCMP etc...)

If those dont kill me, then Cancer probabbly will... Might as well enjoy myself while I can....

I hear a TV station tried to contact the researcher who made the original claim to ask a few questions but he'd stepped outside for a smoke break...    ;)

;D

What spoons?  Let us know, we have a couple of the same suppliers as MEC.

we've been drinking and eating out of plastic for almost a half century now no one has died from cancer caused by plastic. it's a stupid useless research that is wasting money that could be used somewhere much more usefull. Nalgene bottles are made of lexan I can't believe they think it can cause cancer. Maybe the think people like to eat them to ::)

If you read all the data you will find that the big problem is with baby bottles that are boiled.
Given that we do not boil our nalgene bottles, it should not be a problem.

Nalgene causes cancer, read the news about that when it first came out and the follow up on the baby bottles.  Since I had glass as an infant and as an adult have inhaled more then my share of HC , Panes Wessex colored smoke before they introduced the gas mask policy.  and all the times that a hot cup of coffee was served in a malmac cup from an aluminum pot, while I "enjoyed" a cigarette.  I ranked the information at the bottom of the " I care" list.

Too much sunshine causes cancer too....

Unless you are a baby who drinks from plastic bottles, or an adult who exclusively drinks all thier fluid from a Nalgene bottle, I am sure that there is not much to worry about.

Electronic radiation can cause cancer also, and you still see cell phones everywhere

I almost forgot all those times we would pick up brass in our old field caps to dump them in the brass bag.  Cleaning weapons with varasol, CLP with out the use of latex gloves.  I guess I am going to die, wait a minute I am going to die!  Probably a little earlier then some but with it clear in my head.  I lived my life according to my design no regrets.

Major retailers pull bottles containing bisphenol A

Major retailers including the Hudson's Bay Company announced Tuesday they're pulling products containing bisphenol A from their shelves, ahead of a possible
announcement from Health Canada that the chemical is "dangerous."

Health Canada has not confirmed whether it will make such an announcement, but a report in The Globe and Mail claims the agency could make a decision on the chemical's safety as early as Wednesday.

Hudson's Bay, which includes both the Bay and Zellers stores, announced it will no longer sell products like baby bottles that contain bisphenol A. Canadian Tire
Corporation has said it will do the same, along with Forzani Group, which operates Sport Chek, Athlete's World and Coast Mountain Sports. Other major retailers like
Lululemon Athletica and Mountain Equipment Co-op had already removed the products.

Health Canada spokesman Paul Duchesne confirmed to CTV.ca that bisphenol A is being reviewed by the federal government's Chemicals Management Plan, which,
among other mandates, is reviewing chemicals that have been identified as possible hazards to both humans and the environment. He said that, according to a timetable
set for the investigation into potentially hazardous chemicals, an announcement about the findings for bisphenol A was not scheduled to occur until either late spring or
mid summer, depending on what the investigation finds.

If researchers don't like what they find out about bisphenol A, it could pave the way for it to be labelled as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This
would lead to strict regulations governing the chemical's use.

Bisphenol A, or BPA as it's commonly known, is a synthetic chemical that is the main component in polycarbonate, the common, shatter-proof plastic that is used in food
and drink containers. It is also used in everyday household items, from CDs to electronic products to baby bottles.

According to The Globe, Health Canada would be the first government agency from anywhere in the world to attempt to regulate BPA. "I think if the government  proceeds that's certainly a very important development and I think it would be an international precedent," Aaron Freeman, a policy director at Environmental Defence,
told CTV's Canada AM. " "This would place Canada as the first country to regulate bisphenol A. So it would really be a huge step in protecting human health from what
we're seeing is a very risky, toxic chemical."

The move comes on the heels of growing public concern about the chemical's health risks. American studies have shown that most people test positive for trace amounts
of BPA, which mimics the hormone estrogen.

Environmental Defence, an environmental advocacy group, has lobbied for the regulation of bisphenol A. Freeman said that the chemical has been linked to a variety of
health problems. "There are over 150 peer-reviewed studies that show that bisphenol A is linked to breast cancer, to attention deficit disorder, to obesity and a whole
host of developmental problems," Freeman said. "And what that means is because it's an endocrine disruptor, it interferes with the natural developmental processes in
the human body."

The chemical can leach out of food containers when they are heated or put in the dishwasher.

In the meantime, Freeman said that consumers can take some steps to avoid bisphenol A. Consumers can opt for baby bottles that don't contain bisphenol A, including
glass bottles. And there are plenty of metal water bottles, including stainless-steel versions, on the market.

Health Canada bisphenol A announcement imminent

Maybe I'm right out of it, but aren't Nalgene bottles made using the same plastic that water cooler bottles (those big, blue monsters)? How many millions of gallons of water have been consumed from those... :o ???

The vast majority of those who die in North America and Western Europe annually consume bread within the last two weeks of their lives, sometimes several loaves.

Coincidence?

Studies found 30% of people who die of Cervical Cancer are Nuns.  The other 70% were women.

No, those are polyethelyne.  (sp?)

When I read this I was actually in the midst of cleaning a pistol with nitro solvent and CLP, it stunned me so much I nearly swallowed my dip before I went and threw the damned things out.

Next they're going to tell me that the Fullers Earth in respirator canisters is bad for us to.
