Amazing....we are the smartest military unit in the world....as well as the best trained...dont care what anyone else says...

Thanks for sharing that with me....

We truly are!  It is amazing how little anyone knows about us.  Al most everyone I talk to here (with some exceptions) think that we are like the amateur's (USMC to the unknowing).  lol

You are right in that few know much of any value about the RM.  I've done alot of reading on it over the years as a friend of mine joined the legion after high school, and his cousin joined the RM.

Few know for example, that you guys have a reserve component.  How cool a job would that be for the 17 year old Brit finsihing school?

What strikes me is how small the unit truly is when compared to a monster such as the USMC (175,000) all of whom constantly complain about the danger of being stood down.

I still remember Gen L. Mckenzie saying he had never felt so safe in Sarajevo as when two Brit RM worked as his bodyguards.

Your recruiting ads are too cool and the website quite flash.  It seems you have maintained your high standards in the face of alot of P.C. affecting most armed forces.  May you continue to do so!

Mr. Ted

Thanks Mr Ted...unfortuneately...todays political correctness is a nightmare for modern soldiering...Royal Marines Commandos...are one the worlds elite fighting soldier and it is renowned that..most...if not all armed forces worldwide.... try to mirror there standards against the British Marine.
Society has to realise when you use these animals in any conflict...they are not going to lose....you cannot keep dogs in cages...and all animals will fight if they are caged....however...these dogs of war have a brain and are the pinnicle of your modern day thinking mans soldier...proud to of served...proud to be a Royal Marine.

:cdn: I love Canada

Just wanted to jump in here for a second and make a comment about the commandos (RM) I've worked with several British units over the years 2 LI , 1 LI, Green Jackets, SAS, Royal Guardsman, 2 PARA, RE and more. But by far the best and most professional of them all has been the â Å“RMâ ? My last opportunity was Sierra Leone during the civil war 2000-2001. The RM's were deployed after 2 Para and provided us with close protection. Outstanding troops. I spent 90% of my time in the jungle with the RM and will never forget it.

One thing I would like to clear up, and I would like you RM type's input, is the somewhat misleading claim that the RM has the "longest basic training course of any NATO unit".  I hear that thrown around all the time and I find it misleading.  Just trying to find out for sure.  Not putting anyone down - I have more respect for anyone even showing up for recruiting for the RMs than for most people I've met in the last 30 years.

Let me get this straight.  Is it not the following - non comissioned members do a "basic" type phase, of roughly 3 months, followed by an "infantry" type second phase of roughly 3 months, followed by the Commando course, something around 2 months, followed by assorted final trg, like water mobility, swimming, etc. for a total of about 9 months before they win the right to wear the green beret.

Am I off on this?  Am I close?

If I am, the statement "the longest basic trg course" is a bit misleading because what they're saying is that you are not a fully trained trooper until 9 months have passed.

In Canada, basic is about 2 months, SQ another 2, Infantry another 3 or 4 months - and you're up to 8 or 9 months as well before you are a trained infantryman.

Former Marines - can you set me straight?  Thanks.  Again, this is just for my own edification, as I've heard that statement many times and I've wondered about it.

Mr. Ted

RM did a splendid job in Iraq by the way.  As did the USMC, especially compared to USARMY forces in similar situations.  For such a small force(what, 4 battalions of infantry roughly?) the RM sure casts a long shadow.

If a Marine does not successfully complete all of this training and get his "Green Lid", then he is not a Marine.  He cannot be re-mustered to a "soft" trade.  He cannot be RTUed.  He is released.  For us, this is basic training.  Once completed, there is OJT and of course Specialist Training.

30 WEEKS CIVILIAN TO COMMANDO...ITS A SLOG....BUT WHAT A FEAT OF MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ENDURANCE.... >:( >:( >:( :threat: :threat: :threat: :salute: :salute:
