Background Check Query

Hi ,

Incase anyone is aware of the background check , procedure then please guide , they gave me two forms "residency and travel outside Canada" and "Security Clearance form" TBS 330-60 .

The are asking for details like contact address where I lived 10 years back and the supervisors of my previous jobs , as I dont have the contact address for the place where I lived for just 6 months 10 year back. and almost all my previous supervisors have changed their jobs but still have their contact addresses .The last point is my partner is not common law should i mention her in the forms ? Please guide /Suggest should i write these details about the supervisors and the contact number of the residence and explain this in a separate sheet or just submit the forms . It will really helpful if someone who went through similar situation can help .

If “Bob Smith” was your supervisor 10 years ago at “Acme Inc”, that is what they want to know. They understand that “Bob Smith” has probably changed jobs since then, too and that “Acme Inc” might not even exist anymore. You are building a chronology.

If you are missing information and absolutely cannot find it, you have to explain it in the Stat Dec portion, just be warned that it is not a “get out of jail free” card. In terms of where you lived 10 years ago- you are saying that you cannot even find the building on google maps and work out the address that way?

As for your partner- do exactly what the guide says. If it says list a partner (married/common law)- do it. If your partner is not one of those things and the guide doesn’t say to list it- don’t.

Thanks for your response @SeaKingTacco , just last thing in the form they said the 10 years Background check is for secret Clearance/Top Secret Clearance . But I did not applied for some high sensitive streams as reserve . Do you know is the 10 year background check is for every one ?

I assume you are doing this because a recruiter told you too. They should have also told you which clearance level you were applying for.

You need to go back to your recruiter and ask some questions. There is a pretty big difference between a Level 2 and a Level 3 security clearance (the forms are the same, however) . You can only be cleared to the Level that your occupation requires, and not beyond.

And funny thing is they send me these forms separately, not a part of actual form i filled when i initiated my application.

They weren't going to waste time with you requiring some medical forms. If you have foreign implications (lived outside the country for long periods) or are not a citizen they will want additional security screening.

Seems like that's the case , I stayed for 1 years out side in last 10 years , so what you think they will clear the background if you stayed outside or, its going to be No , I am Canadian by nationality.
The have asked for insanely large amount of information , incase you know what kind of security check they perform for the recruitment

It is case by case. They will investigate what you might have done in that 1 year outside Canada and determine if you are a security risk or not. You may have to redo the security form once you are at basic, and again in 5 years or so. Keep that information handy, as it make it easier to fill out the forms again in the future. Redundancy is a form of government bureaucracy, so it doesn't matter if you filled out a form last week, you could get asked to fill out the same form for another department next month. Deep breath and remind yourself this is something you wanted.

Outside Canada time delays the clearance as they have to check with the authorities of that country if there is anything and some countries are slow to respond.

You state "partner is not common-law". Partner usually means you are in a relationship and probably living together. If this is the case you may actually be considered common-law even though you don't view it that way or declare it.

From my experience dealing with security clearances expect the first try to come back with questions and a requirement to redo the forms to provide the information. I have never processed one that made it through on the first go.

Thanks for the detailed response yes by partner( We are in relation ship but we dont share a common address from last 1 year , that's what they have defined a common law partner ) I will definitely declare it , As its a secret clearance and have some time spent out of Canada in last 10 years so will definitely expect a delay .

The only thing incase i declare her my common law partner , then I have to declare her parents details and their work history and current address , I am not sure how much comfortable she will be to declare that

Thanks @sarahsmom , Its a huge data of all my residencies , employment history and vacations so will keep it some where . Believe me it took me a lot of time to gather all that , most difficult was police clearance from the country where i stayed for 1 year

Thanks a lot @CountDC @sarahsmom @SeaKingTacco , today have submitted my security check and Residency and Travel forms . I have added two supplementary sheets with all possible details which they might ask in future . I went to recruitment center and ask them review the file and after getting their confirmation , I hand over the hard copy of the docs . I even sent a email after handing over the docs . Even they said it might take years before the security check completes . Really appreciate your help , it really means a lot .
