Hey guys, has anyone used the ATC-2000 Helmet Cam by Oregon Scientific?  If not, do you think it will
work well in the field?
It comes with a pretty wicked price, so I'm thinking of getting one.

see you later.

also, it looks like this one doesn't have night vision.  does anyone have any better ideas
as to what works better?

Well, they're definitely tough:

yeah, that was one of the better quality ones I've seen.  I haven't seen any uncompressed footage though.

They are not too bad, but not all that rugged mine broke in about 3 days in A'stan just sitting in a LAV

Can you reccomend any other alternative around the same price point?

Not exactly within the same pricepoint, but still something that could be considered an alternative.

It's a normal (but tiny) normal MiniDV camcorder wit ha rubberized body, and a seperate objective module that has a headstrap to mount on a helmet for sports. Apparently it has average quality (for a MiniDV camcorder, which is pretty good, in my opinion), and is extraordinarily rugged. Worth a looksee. I've seen them at he Best-Buy in Greenfield park (Montreal South Shore) despite their age, so I know its possible to find them.

I got the ATC-2000 while I was in Shilo on tasking, it's not too bad of a camera.  Stills and video in low light tend to get grainy and have a Vietnam-era movie type look (which could be a plus I guess for some).  Takes a bit of fuddling around with though to ensure you're not videotaping the sky or the grass.  Audio though, sucks.  I'm not sure how the microphone is mounted, but another buddy got the same camera and accidentally knocked it so it was pointing straight up during an activity, and the audio was crystal clear (though all we saw was a lot of clouds, sky, and mosquitos), but when the camera is pointing forward, the only real sound you get is usually just your weapon firing.  Everything else sounds muffled and low volume.  Good buy though if you can get it cheap and just want some videos as mementos.  Hope this helps.  :salute:

some links to uncompressed footage for the 2000 on there.  MiniDV is good... but expensive and often fragile.  If anything I'd go with the samsung-sc-x210l Good quality, real compact.  Then just get a hardcase from tactical tailor with MOLLE, drill a hole for the wire and you're good to go.
