The World All Arms Pacestick Competition 2007
3RCR Team wins World Overseas Pacestick Champions 2007
The World All-Arms Pacestick Competition is an annual event held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. This event dates back to 1952 when the Royal Military Academy Sergeant-Major, John Lord, initiated the Competition as a practical training aid of the pacestick.
An International Pacestick Team consists of four members, three Sergeants and a Warrant Officer as a Team Captain. The Team Captain provided the words of command over the course of the competition, which includes marching in slow and quick time while pacing the stick. During the course the pacestick is transferred from hand to hand by conducting drill movements forcing the members to be proficient at pacing with the left and right hand.
This year, LCol Roger Barrett, CO 3RCR, authorised 3RCR to enter a Battalion Pacestick Team despite an already very demanding unit training schedule. The team consisted of WO Stephen Gillis, Sgt Dave Stewart, Sgt Stephen Teskey and Sgt Greg Whitman. The Royal Canadian Regiment has a distinguished history of participating in Royal Canadian Regimental Boyle Cup Pacestick Competition which is held here in Canada. The Battalion RSM, CWO Ernie Hall, a past Boyle Cup winner oversaw the training and mentored the team. There were 11 teams entered in this year's competition. While in England the team was hosted throughout by Warrant Officer II Chalky White of the Scots Guards. His efforts were certainly well appreciated went far beyond our expectations.
On the day of the Competition the teams were greeted by true English weather, a torrential downpour and no wet weather program would ever be permitted. In fine British tradition and with a stiff upper lip, the teams persevered and the competition carried on regardless of the weather. However, when the 3RCR team marched on, the weather miraculously cleared up, the rain stopped and the sun shone through. The team had a flawless run resulting in being recognized as the World Overseas Pacestick Champions 2007.
Pacesticking has always been a very important part of the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) professional development in The Royal Canadian Regiment. These competitions play an important role in maintaining some of our regimental customs and traditions. In addition, it creates an opportunity to bring together Warrant Officers and Sergeants from around the world for a friendly competition that builds camaraderie and esprit de corps.
The 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, is grateful to the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England for hosting this event and looks forward to participating again in the future.
