I was wondering at a military funeral or law enforcment funeral etc they usually have a 21 gun salute.  why 21? what is the significance of the number 21?.. thanks

Linking from the bottom of the page it takes you here http://www.mdw.army.mil/content/anmviewer.asp?a=49 and they mention the Anglo-Saxon Empire ships carrying seven guns.  Is that the same as the British Empire?  ???
