    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I strongly doubt an MCDV replacement with the previously stated capabilities of 25kts, mounted main gun (of whatever calibre), with the ability to launch RHIBS and UAV's AND handle the North Atlantic (not to mention possible trips to Africa) would displace less than 1000t.

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

That's a fair point, but if you wanted all that capability, why not just build 6-8 more CSC? Seeing as how it's the sensor suite/equipment that drives the cost, not the displacement or length of the hull, is it really any cheaper to go for a corvette over a hot production line of your frigate...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I've a question re:25mm...Is it possible to sink/halt a large vessel with that weapon? I'm thinking about a ship up to container vessel size.

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I also wonder about numbers. If we were to go "all out" on the MCDV replacement and give it missiles, torpedoes etc, how many could there be built? I doubt that even if it were armed similarly to an AOPS, we'd get a one for one replacement, let alone armed like a frigate. Given its perceived...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I suppose it depends on what we want to do with them. Will they be primarily deployed in our waters, or do we need them to go beyond that. If so, how far? Africa, Gulf of Aden or limited to Caribbean ops? I know that the AOPS are capable of any of the above, but with a fleet size of 6, I believe...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Thanks for the info. These things really are well appointed vessels and should be a valuable addition everywhere they deploy.

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

I wasn't aware that the AOPS had a third crane. Where is it located?

    Canadian Surface Combatant RFQ

I completely agree with how the TG would negate a good deal of the drawbacks of a single ship. I do find myself wondering how frequently a 3 ship TG will deploy as a whole. Given maintenance, training and workups, not to mention only 2 Oilers, I feel like a single ship deployment happens more...

    Canadian Surface Combatant RFQ

Makes me think that we're trying to do too much with one hull and arguably should have gone with a class of 5 AWD ships and then a seperate class of 10 GP. I understand there's a benefit to having all 15 ships the same, but it certainly seems like there's a significant drawback in this case.

    Canadian Surface Combatant RFQ

While a major leap over CPF capability, it's down a bit in over all area defense compared to a 280, in terms of SM family birds. I guess this is somewhat offset by the radar and engagement suite being more accurate and responsive, but it still seems like a let down. Having a 32 cell vls would've...

    Replacing the Subs

I've often wondered if it wasn't best to scale funding towards the services that are most relevant at home and abroad. I'm certainly no expert, but I've thought that scaling back the Army to one focused on special forces and training vs having it trying to do everything with limited resources...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

This is interesting. I was under the impression that the ship already had a theoretical ballistic missile defense capability currently. If I'm not mistaken, the radar suite (APAR and SMART-L) is essentially the same as on the Dutch DZP frigates. IIRC the Dutch ship TROMP conducted an exercise...

    Replacing the Subs

Oh no, I'm not suggesting that be done UNLESS we get a class of 6-7 OPV. I was suggesting to have the AOPS ported east coast for ease of access to arctic, if and when a replacement is built for the MCDV. I completely understand their current CONOPS have them envisioned to do far more than...

    Replacing the Subs

Just looking at a map and getting reaquainted with the North. It would seem to me, and I'm certainly not an expert, that it looks about the same distance from Esquimalt to Nanisivik as it does from Halifax to there. So, if I understand what you're saying Colin, a CCG ship leaves BC, refuels in...

    Replacing the Subs

If/when the RCN gets a modern OPV (outside of the AOPS, I mean) to replace the MCDV'S, I think it would be best to do just that. IMHO, if there were 6-7 vessels (something like RIVER or OTAGO class for example) in a new OPV class, they should all be based with the Pacific fleet and the AOPS...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

If it's not a state secret...what was Freddie's record??? With reference to doubling engine power, there's also the Ivar Huitfeldt vs Absalon example. It took exactly twice the engines and commensurately twice the power to make the hull go from a 24kt top end to 30 kts. I think that's fascinating.

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

There's also the mission planning space and flexibility to consider. I think the weapons suite is also fairly well suited to that sort of mission. May be a viable option if frigates are in shorter supply.

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

It was this possible lack of available frigates that got me into this line of thinking. And to your earlier point regarding speed of AOPS vs speed of dhow, I completely agree. With the AOPS having the ability to deploy 2, 3 or maybe even more small craft (RHIBS, work boats etc) that are capable...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Out of curiosity, and I may have mentioned it before, but, is an AOPS capable of doing something like CTF 150 patrols in Gulf of Aden? I'm wondering if the max speed is too limiting a factor to be truly effective or if there's anything else inherent in the class that counts them out.
