I strongly doubt an MCDV replacement with the previously stated capabilities of 25kts, mounted main gun (of whatever calibre), with the ability to launch RHIBS and UAV's AND handle the North Atlantic (not to mention possible trips to Africa) would displace less than 1000t.

That's a fair point, but if you wanted all that capability, why not just build 6-8 more CSC? Seeing as how it's the sensor suite/equipment that drives the cost, not the displacement or length of the hull, is it really any cheaper to go for a corvette over a hot production line of your frigate...

I've a question re:25mm...Is it possible to sink/halt a large vessel with that weapon? I'm thinking about a ship up to container vessel size.

I suppose it depends on what we want to do with them. Will they be primarily deployed in our waters, or do we need them to go beyond that. If so, how far? Africa, Gulf of Aden or limited to Caribbean ops? I know that the AOPS are capable of any of the above, but with a fleet size of 6, I believe...

I completely agree with how the TG would negate a good deal of the drawbacks of a single ship. I do find myself wondering how frequently a 3 ship TG will deploy as a whole. Given maintenance, training and workups, not to mention only 2 Oilers, I feel like a single ship deployment happens more...

Makes me think that we're trying to do too much with one hull and arguably should have gone with a class of 5 AWD ships and then a seperate class of 10 GP. I understand there's a benefit to having all 15 ships the same, but it certainly seems like there's a significant drawback in this case.

If/when the RCN gets a modern OPV (outside of the AOPS, I mean) to replace the MCDV'S, I think it would be best to do just that. IMHO, if there were 6-7 vessels (something like RIVER or OTAGO class for example) in a new OPV class, they should all be based with the Pacific fleet and the AOPS...

If it's not a state secret...what was Freddie's record??? With reference to doubling engine power, there's also the Ivar Huitfeldt vs Absalon example. It took exactly twice the engines and commensurately twice the power to make the hull go from a 24kt top end to 30 kts. I think that's fascinating.

There's also the mission planning space and flexibility to consider. I think the weapons suite is also fairly well suited to that sort of mission. May be a viable option if frigates are in shorter supply.

Out of curiosity, and I may have mentioned it before, but, is an AOPS capable of doing something like CTF 150 patrols in Gulf of Aden? I'm wondering if the max speed is too limiting a factor to be truly effective or if there's anything else inherent in the class that counts them out.
