    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Not the cut out midships, further aft. I see where the RHIB on davits is located, but if you go almost to the stern, there’s a cut out on the bottom deck with what looks like a side scan sonar apparatus. I was just noting it as I’ve mostly seen that setup all the way at the stern as opposed to...

Interesting that cut out on the port side sweep deck. Looks to be for deploying UUV, towed sonar etc.

L Let me just correct myself here, I should have written 30mm. Apologies for the erroneous information.

The drawing looks like something 25-35 mm range. I’d hope for the 35 Marlin that the CSC is supposed to get. At least there’s a better options for ammo (the 25 doesn’t have an air burst shell, for example).

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I have to say, the artwork does put me in mind of an evolved MCDV. I’m very interested to see her from the stern to see how that platform is arranged what the differentiation (if any) is between the flight deck and sea can storage.

Having only seen the one side in the concept drawing, I’m imagining that it may have a duplicate RHIB on the other.

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I would say, based on everything I’ve read on this thread and others, that the replacement vessel will likely be somewhat longer and larger overall. With the MCDV already bumping up against the 1000 tonne mark, I’d imagine it would be considered a major ship, in that context. Though, with Heddle...

I read that way too fast and thought it said “survivable, fightable and adorable”. Maybe that’s one way to connect to the public??

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Ok, I get it. To be clear, I meant fleet mix, rather than execution. I’m of the mind that logistics are more important than they get given credit for and Germany has a Navy where that doesn’t take a back seat. I guess I could have pointed at the USN or RN as other examples, but they’re also far...

Emulate the fleet plan, but not the execution then, maybe? 😉

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Fair enough, but I think the point is still valid that we can look to how others do it and model our fleet mix with that in mind. I used Germany as an example, because the overall size of the current fleet is comparable to the RCN, but they don’t field much in the way of an amphibious/transport...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

If I were to want to emulate another navy, I might benchmark Germany. Especially where logistics are concerned, the Germans have a very flexible force, including a mix of 11 oilers/support vessels. If the RCN is to operate task groups, I feel it would be much easier with 4-5 oilers rather than...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I certainly hope they’ll select the 30mm, considering they’re buying 30 Marlins for the CSC. Economy of scale should ensure the best price, as well as getting a weapon with multiple types of ammunition (including air burst, which is unavailable on the 25mm), better elevation and more ready...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

If that’s the case, are they able to crew 7 East Coast MCDVs? Also, I believe you had said before that you suspected to see some of them paid off/laid up as the AOPV come online, so this isn’t entirely unexpected is it?

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

For sure. So then the choice becomes either use an expensive asset that could probably be better used elsewhere or don’t do the stuff the MCDVs are currently doing. But, the things the MCDVs are doing are pretty important and play well in the papers, so is it something that should really be...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I’m aware they are quite capable of offshore patrol, more so than MCDV’s. My point is the stretch of how much you can do with 6 ships vs 12. Manpower is obviously a critical problem that needs to be overcome as soon as possible and imho should be the number one priority across the board, no...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

That’s what it seems like would happen. So, then, can you really call it a replacement if you can no longer do the work of the platform you’re ostensibly replacing?

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I’m curious about the feasibility of replacing the 12 MCDV’s with a class of 6 AOPS. Is there any way that the same missions can actually be done with half the vessels? Given that there is a drive to show the flag in the Arctic, the high profile that is given to Op CARIBBE, the goodwill that is...
